Nonfiction Favorites | 2023 Edition
My favorite nonfiction reads in 2023.
This was a slow nonfiction reading year for me—which says less about the nonfiction books out there (including the ones on my TBR) and more about what my brain wanted to read (just fiction, mainly fantasy and sci-fi)—but I still want to share my favorites: Real Self-Care by Pooja Lakshmin and Drama Free by Nedra Glover Tawwab.

Real Self-Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness
Why I read it: I added Real Self-Care to my to-be-read list when Dr. Lakshmin was interviewed on— that interview was titled the Tyranny of Faux Self-Care, and I was hooked.
Review #insixwords: The self-care content you actually need.
Recommendation: If you struggle with burnout or find that the self-care you’re doing isn’t working the way you expect it to, you need this book. It acknowledges that there are systemic issues at play that can lead to burnout while also giving you guidance on how to take care of yourself in a world that doesn’t care for you.

Drama Free: A Guide to Managing Unhealthy Family Relationships
Why I read it: I follow Nedra Glover Tawwab on Instagram, read her Substack Nedra’s Nuggets, and read her first book, Set Boundaries, Find Peace. I’m always intrigued to learn more about unhealthy family relationships for reasons, so I picked this one up, too.
Review #insixwords: Validating, understanding exploration of family dysfunction.
Recommendation: This book is for anyone who has a dysfunctional family or knows someone whose family is dysfunctional and wants to learn more about how to break the cycle or handle the dysfunction.
What have you read and enjoyed recently? I love a good recommendation.
